Re: fusible links vs fuses

Hi Butch,
The advantage of a fusible link over a glass fuse and holder is the fusible link can carry a heavier load and can substain a brief voltage spike with out blowing like a conventional fuse would. And obviously a fusible link looks a lot better than a spliced in fuse holder. The fusible links on your Sport Fury would be located near the starter relay area. Factory ones are usually marked with a plastic "flag" stating their load limit.

Other than authenticity Steve, is there an advantage to using a fusible link? I'd think an in-line visible glass fuse would be preferable, but there are several "how to"s on the web for gauging and installing fusible links, so it must have appeal to use for some reason. Are there fusible links in the electrical system of the survivor 64 Sport Fury that you inspected for me before I bought it?

Hi Butch,
A fusible link is a length of wire that acts as a fuse compared to the
standard glass tube style fuses. What happens is if the circuit protected by
the fusible link overloads, the inside of the wire will melt.

What is the difference between a fuse and a fusible link?

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

My first will be the engine compartment wiring, the shop manual gives
the wire size and color for all wires. I just need to make a drawing
that includes all of my changes before I start. I have an old harness
with the bulkhead connectors.

I really like the idea of replacing the under dash wiring but I may try
to just change or add another fuse block for now.

Thanks Again
