Engine Turned pattern on '64 Sport Fury side trim

Have you restored this trim on your car?
If so, did you tape over it with the "engine turned" tape?
Or, were you able to brighten it up with chemicals or good old fashioned elbow grease?
My local metal guy is able to make the outer edges of this trim look like new, but the engine turned part (recessed areas) cannot be buffed, it is so thin it disappears!
