I may be wrong,,,,,,,I thought he was going to be putting in a later model  
tranny as well

The  '65 was the last year for the cable shift wasn't it? Isn't the  
transmission hook-up different for the mechanical type as opposed to the  
cable type? Can a cable shift trans be switched that way without other
