Re: 273 Swapping Sides on Pistons

Over there, they're talking about doing it with the Commando domed pistons, so you have to rotate the piston/rod assembly when you swap banks so the dome doesn't hit the head. What I'm saying is that you dont get the offset advantage by doing that

that would be the same thing as long as you did not twist the piston.

If you find the article, Dodger, post it on the FABO site, as they wont
believe me when I tell them about this procedure. They all think you just
switch the piston/rod assembly bank-for-bank.

Ok hope I am not opening a can of dead worms here, but will tell what I
was
told many years ago.......
to reduce rotating friction, turn your pistons 180 degrees when
installing them,,,,,,,,,,,,,supposedly the story goes like
this,,,,,,,,,the pin
in the piston is not dead center, and is designed to create a very
minimal
amount of bind when at top dead center of the stroke,,,,,this is done
so
as
to eliminate piston rattle when the piston is in the process of changing
direction at end of stroke.......... the article that I read on this
also
said that the engine would be noisy compared to the stock build, but
would not
cause harm,,,,,,,if someone is interested I will try to find the
article
and post it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, dodger

Tom,
We used to do it on big blocks all the time (flat tops), but have
never tried it on a small block. We were always careful not to rev it
to
much when the motor was cold but it seemed that the motors made more
power.

Over on the A-Bodies only Board, they are talking about swapping sides
on
the 10.5:1 pistons on 273's. I had some confusion, but it seems to
make
a
little sense. Dome offset isnt centered, so parts of the piston may
come
closer to the head in places and more gap in others.

the
page is where part of it starts posted by Russ (Double M).

Has anybody on the list done this in the past and had any real success?
What are the downsides to this?

Thoughts?

Thanks
