Need Speedo Advice

No, not the swimsuit! I put a new speedo cable in my '64 Belvedere last fall. It worked for 1/2 mile, then quit. I took the instrument panel out a few times with the same result - it would work for a short distance and quit. Finally, I got it working very nicely on the day we drove it about 25 miles to my buddy's place for winter storage in November. It was working great - and right on the money for accuracy according to my wife who was following behind us. My daughter was driving. We got about 20 miles into our trip, then when we took a right turn, it stopped working right there. Bummer - we were so happy it was working, then nothing. The car is back home now, and I had a theory that when we turned maybe the cable sleeve had too much slack in it or something and it moved and popped the inner cable out of the speedo gear in the tranny. It does seem to be coming out of the gear when it stops working. So today I started at the tranny and tried
to get the cable sleeve as secured as I could along the way toward the firewall. I put it back together, and it worked - for about 100'. Any suggestions on possible obvious things I'm missing?

Thanks,

Dave
