Re: flywheel- crankshaft.

Stan, thanks for that info. That makes things more clear for me now. I expect that would be true for the big block pickups as well............................MO

According to the chassis manual "4 speed trans got forged cranks which did not require any external balancing. Problems arise when trying to convert from auto to manual." The fly wheel can be rebalanced by drilling 31/32 holes (3).66 deep at the piont of drill. Have to get book to see pics.

As far as I know the factory never made one. In the rare
instance where a later 400 or 440 was ordered with a
4-speed, they used a steel crank. The only external balance
flywheels I've ever seen were big block trucks with 12"
flywheels.

Hay all, after weighing all the info , I am going to leave
the 78 440
engine together. not changing the external balance crank to
my 413 internal
balance crank. Since I will use a 4 speed, I now need to
find a used 10 1/2
"flywheel for external balance. I don't want to modify an
internal
balance flywheel and I know about the new one from" 440
Source. " So what
engines and years would have an interchangable 10 1/2 "
external balance
flywheel? Thanks for any help......................MO
