It is just as you guessed..It provides a straighter pull but it won't keep you from banging your noggin on the window if you get t-boned.
That would require a NASCAR seat and a Hans Device.
I think the X configuration was standard for almost all Mopars of that era.
I know a guy that is an expert in all phases of the 62-65 Mopars.
He figured a way to install Hemi heads on the wedge block and even took the prototype to Chrysler but they weren't interested.
Too much machining involved for them to make practical.
