Steve...you're correct...if you're going to re-use the lifters. If you buy
new lifters for a used cam, you can install them on any cam lobe. They will
break-in just as the original lifters did when they were new.
As far as using solid lifters on a hydraulic camshaft, I don't know. I seem
to remember the ramps of a hydraulic cam are made a little "harsher" to make
up for the inherent "cushioning" of hydraulic lifters?
I found this on the "net somewhere...
"The only real advantage of solid lifters is their ability to run in the
high RPM's with better control. The lifter will never pump up, or down, no
matter what the RPM, or oil pressure is.
The lash is always the same.
The rule is:
You can use solids on a hydraulic cam, but you can't use hydraulic lifters
on a solid lifter cam. The solid lifter cam has an area called the quieting
ramp (you can actually see this on some older solid lifter cams) that
transitions from the base circle(lash area) to the opening closing ramps.
The problem is that, when using solid lifters on hyd. cam, wheo knows what
lash to run?
You could end up with a very noisy valvetrain, as well.
I would stay with the hyd. lifters. People have run them up to 9000RPM
without any trouble."

One thing I would be concerned with--mixing used lifters with a different
used camshaft they break-in wear to each other and to mis match them may
cause premature wear. And that is why you keep the lifters in order with
the lobe they were on. I have no experience with it, but thats what the
big boys tell me..................................MO

You can run solids on a hyd. cam. Just set the lash as a solid. No lifter
pump up and more RPM. Run good pushrods, espically the exhaust, no flex or
harmonics.

Here's my dumb question of the week.
Can you change hydraulic lifters out and install solid
lifters?
I just bought a nice used set of roller rockers along with
an almost new set of solid lifters and like the cam that is
in my car right now but it is hydraulic.
Any help appreciated.
