If it were me, I'd probably start at the bulkhead and start examining wires coming out, first to the starter relay, starter, voltage regulator, etc. Make sure the fuseable link isnt burnt. Test each wire to see if it is grounded. Test from wire to Ground first, then start verifying voltages to each component under the hood. You said you saw them smoke, Check all the wires in that area for cracks or scorch marks. Hopfully you'll be able to find where your short may have been.

Got  the car back from the body shop for a new paint job. several weeks
later  went to start it and dead as can be. i tried to charge it but no
reading  on the charger at all. The battery was a 4 year old Walmar
Neverstart so  replaced it. Hooked up the cables and things started
smoking. the rest is  history. must be a dead short somewhere that
drained  it.
