I installed the same hardware as Scott. I'm not sure a bigger plate welded to the sheet metal would make much of a difference. Seems to me that the weak link is the sheet metal tearing, and I don't know that a welded plate has too much of an advantage over those large washers (maybe some, though). But in any case, I feel better knowing there's at least something back there that's better than nothing.

That will work, just afraid that the washers' are not big or strong enough to withstand the impact of an accident. Bigger and thicker (in this case) is better. Even if you do not weld them in, jm2cw
