There's a good story on the web about Mav back when the Max Wedge cars came out. Mav liked the automatic but it didn't shift when you hit a gear, so they had a guy (last name Ford) who got the trans to shift at about 6500 rpm or where ever Mav wanted it to shift. It seems the upshift control at full throtle was run by a centrifigal weight. By varying the amount of weight getting slung around the tranny until it reached the correct rpm for the shift gave Mav the edge. He could concentrate on the lights and on coming off the line. He left the car in "D" and the auto trans shifted where it was "programmed" to, making the Mav one of the most consistant winners with the new Max Wedge. Remember, the only choices that year where a 3 speed stick or a 727.
Now for the best part of the story. The Mav lived in a trailer park at the time and they were working on the car outside all night. Whenever they changed the weights for the trans, Mav fired up the uncapped car and took it for a blast on an adjoining road. He pissed everyone in the trailer park off but he didn't care. He was ready on race day. He gave it everything he had like he always did. He didn't quit that night until that trans shifted exactly where he wanted it to shift.
I'm glad he's still with us. I hadn't heard anything about him in a while. Lots of guys didn't last until the 40th Hemi Reunion. If they have a 50th reunion I hate to think how many more would be gone.
