A friend of mine has a MakerBot, though he's more of a computer geek than a car guy.  For small (very) stuff, it seems to work pretty well.  But it also seems a little temperamental to keep running right; a lot of precision mechanical pulleys and such.  Etch-A-Sketch on steroids.  But out comes detailed hard plastic parts that could definitely be used for a metal mold.
