Yes, have someone put the car in drive while holding the brake pedal down and watch to see if the motor has a fit of movement. You also can then listen in a more targeted way to pinpoint where the "clunk" is coming from, a sound usually associated with a u-joint.
 
The push button mechanism is very stout; most likely, as Rich pointed out, it just needs to be cleaned and lubed.
