Re: Ac working??

wow thanks for the information. Im going tomorrow to talk with a ac guy in town. just get it topped off. Like i said it blew cool for a sec....not super cold but enough to know it did something. Hopefully i get it workin....itd be nice cause thursday im taking a roadtrip to either baton rouge or galveston to cruise and see how she holds up. prolly stay a day and come back. as hot as it is ac would be great! i just hope hooking up that ac doesnt make it want to overheat with the extra load. hopefully ill get that ps cap in too by then so i wont leak everywhere! lol

DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE DRYER!!  If it had cold air coming out as you stated, it has a minimum charge or it would not do anything!  Changing the dryer with a charge will probably cause personal injury or death.  It sounds like it needs topping of with less than a pound of freon or it never would have started to run.  It sounds like it's an old system, they will leak down over time from lack of use.  Just have it toped off and forget it, the reason you don't have this problem on newer cars is the AC is used even on the coldest day.  Every time you use your defroster your AC is on.  On a side note DO NOT use any of these R12 substitutes as they are very dangerous, most use propane and other very flammable & corrosive chemicals.

While driving it blew mediocre, not hot air but not cool. Idk how to explain it. Hard to tell when the cars been sittin in garage. I hope it works cause I need it down here. Only thin is the the tensioner bearing is kinda noisy...guess that's why when it prolly finally got low after all the years someone took belt off. Well see I'ma bring it somewhere tomm or wed.

Sounds as if you are a lucky guy. Service it for the $130, its high because its F12. If it works...GREAT....if not save up $1500. Don’t change the dryer, before you open the system have the Freon that’s in there sucked out and saved.

Hopefully I can find a dryer. It's holding gas...I pushed on one of the valves going to the compressor and stuff came out, I figured if it was leaking eventually there wouldn't be anything left all them years huh? A ac guy told me as long as the systems never been opened the dryer should be fine...idk

Jacob,
My suggestion is to take it to an AC guy. If you do (and you probably do) have a leak, you'll be chasing you tail and wasting freon. I know, been there, done that. I believe if you don't have a sniffer to fine the leak, then it in most cases will just leak out. Change out the dryer before you take it to a AC guy. Save some money and time.

Put a belt on the ac compressor before work today. Turned the underdash unit on. Clutch kicked in and it seemed to all be working fine. It got cooler for like 5 sec then it was just air. Ideas? What could be wrong besides maybe low freon? It's 100-130 bucks to top off with 2 lbs. Sucks...especially if there's a leak I don't know about...
