Re: How does raising the rear

I also think your pulling the driveshaft out of the trans as the angle is retoted down. So your vibration is the front of the shaft wobbling in the yoke ,wearing out your sleeve bushing in the tailshaft. Grab it and see if it moves a lot. Your driveshaft is probably to short to begin with and you only made it shorter.  Just my thoughts. My 72 Dodge truck came from the factory with what I think is to short a shaft. When I looked at two others in a junkyard here I found the same thing. If yourtailshft bushing is worn, vibration.

Yea, the light kind'a went on after I sent that. Told you I was dense, lol, hard headed too. I read the next email, I believe from Dodger, about the transmission staying put, Duh, visualization kicked in gear. Thanks. to both of you.

I'll "attempt" tp explain this problem a bit more.....lol  1st has anyone ever changed the orginal pinion angle on the car????   I also race on Dirt and pinion angle is a very important thing in getting forward traction. We run an angle of 5-8 degrees on a race car on dirt.I've never measured the pinion angle on a street car yet but I "assume" it to be about 3-4 degrees. With that said, leaf springs are anchored at BOTH ends altho there is some movement thru the rear shackles. When you add air shocks to a car and pump air into them, you are in a sence pushing the rear-end down further away from the car. or raising the car away from the rear-end housing. With the transmission being in a fixed position and NOT being able to move that end of the driveshaft does not move up or down BUT the angle does change going back to the rear-end.This also will change the PINION angle. As someone has already stated about that pencil......Take that pencil and lay it on a piece of paper.....now mark TWO points at each end of the pencil.......now move ONE end of the pencil down...IF you had taken another pencil and layed it up against the 1st pencil and held the TWO pencils together as you moved the 1st pencil down you will see how the angle changed the further down you moved it.    I hope this might explain it a bit better without being able to actually being able to show you in person

I wouldnt think that air shocks would pump up high enough to cause any vibration problems to a pinion angle UNLESS someone at some time changed the orginal angle.

Unless I'm completely dense(which is possible), air shocks do not affect the pinion angle. It raises the body away from the axle, but doesn't move the drive shaft and rear axle. Air shocks just give the body move room to move up and down.
If the body of the car was fixed(unable to move), then the air shocks would push down on the springs, and maybe get some slight pinion angle. But unless the car is going over some very serious bumps, there should be no pinion angle change. Air shocks have been around for a long time and I've never heard of anyone complaining about pinion angle vibration or any vibration after them being install. Mys elf incliuded. jm2cw

My 64 Polara has had a vibration for a long time. I've suspected it was the pinion angle since the car is raised a few inches in the rear, so a few weeks a go I let some air out of the rear shocks and a lot of the vibration went away, which kinda proves the culprit is probably the pinion angle. Just FYI.
