Re: Front End Work

Ollie,

These are great philosophies that I will surly pass on when my family asks why I spend so much time in the garage.

.....The ol' "one thing leads to another" effect!

.....The "snowball effect" is one of the joys of working on our classic cars !!

I've tried to find snowballs for my 63' but could not locate any American made!

Gary,
The best way to determine if the ball joints are bad is to jack the front
end off the ground until the tires clear a couple of inches. Put a pry bar
under the tire and pry up on it. Visually look at the ball joint and see if
there is movement in the joint itself. There should be none.
Yes, you can purchase just the rubber seals. The tie rod or ball joint must
be unbolted to to get the new rubber on.

The ol' "one thing leads to another" effect! :D  Good work Ollie.

That reminds me to ask what is the easiest way to check to determine if ball
joints are bad? Tips?

And if the ball joint itself is good but the rubber seal is deteriorated
from age, can you replace the rubber or do you need a whole new ball joint?

Thanks,
Gary H.
