Re: Early '62 Newport?

If I remember right you have that 4 door HT with copper paint and cocoa inside.  If that is your car it is a 1962.  Mine was built in November 1961 so I have a very few minor differences than 1962 cars built in 1962.  The difference is the back vinyl of the front seat, mine has lines in it and a 1962 build in 1962 is smooth on the back of the seat.  I've seen photos of the copper car from OR and it was built in 1961 if that's your car.

The only parts that I know of could be different, assuming nothing was changed, is the power steering pump, Power brake booster, Alt could be a Gen, Carb could be different, Closed Crank Case for smog may or may not be there, it could just vent to the ground via a tube on the pass side of the motor.

Everything else should be the same.  1961 Newports have a cast iron transmission, 1962 has an aluminum transmission...both have the parking brake on the back of the transmission, like a drum brake.  I've not seen a 1962 model year Newport with the cast iron tranny.

For both 1961 and 1962 Newports share Gas tanks, Water Pumps, Exhaust system, Fuel Pump, Carbs...depending on options, Radiators interchange but difference in capacity depending on options, A/C system, Rear Axel and related drive line bits, Spindles for the front, Steering gear assembly both power and not, Ball Joints, Power Steering pumps with brackets, Power Steering Hoses, Torsion Bars, rear leaf springs, Some Brake Drums depends on options most will interchange,  Brake Shoes, Rims, Dashes and interiors will interchange but have subtle differences in appearance.  Front fenders and hood, front bumper, front turn signal lights, Grill but different look 1961 says C H R Y S L E R across the top 1962 does not.  Grill insert, mirrors both inside and out, Tune up parts, Glass-but only with like models-IE 2 door, 4 door ht, 4 door sd, etc.

Some things you think would fit between the two and do not, are Tie Rods, Wheel Cylinders, doors - 1961 has fins 1962 don't....it will fit but look really really stupid, belt line stainless, rear bumper and tail lights, motor and tranny...they will interchange but you have to do them as a set, Some have alternators as it was an option in 1961 and Generator was standard, I've seen a 1962 Newport with a stock generator, it was an early build.

Really the two cars are about the same.  Most parts you will need to replace...wear items...are the same for 1961 Newports and 1962 Newports.  You will find some of the old parts are only listed as 1961 but it's for 1962 too.  And some things say only fit 1963 and 1964 but will fit just fine in a 1962.  It's all depends on what vendor you are getting it from and how good there data is.  You have to know what you are looking for and ask for 1 year older or newer to see if it will fit, sometimes items in the wrong box or error in the computer or book they are using.  Brakes are going to be your biggest pain in the ass.  Brake Shoes are 1962, NOT 1963+ I don't care what anybody says, they won't fit.  If you can bring the old part you are looking for it will help you a lot in finding the right part.

Now that you know looking for parts is a lot of fun, accept it, embrace it, use it.  Just keep on looking, it's out there, you will find it.

Goodluck
