That's where your short is at. The front doors are supposed to illuminate that light and the rear doors the one on the roof. Sounds like somebody was creative with wiring. The one above the radio shorts out about 25% of the time if I were to guess. It's all metal with no plastic, and easy place to short out.
The wire from the door switch is a ground wire in the Newports....as I'm sure all the rest of our old cars. Just take out the radio, ( I pulled mine out from the speaker opening in the dash, I think that is the easy way) and take off that chrome piece that goes around the clock area and radio and the part with the light. You will find the problem right up there. If the bulb is out it's even easier for it to short out and blow the fuse.
