They did a mythbusters show about whether having your tailgate open or closed was better for your mileage. Turns out having it closed was better, I guess a bubble of air forms back there and makes the truck more aerodynamic. Can't say about the toneau cover though, I would say it can't hurt,,, but I always thought running with the tailgate down would improve my mileage, and make my truck faster at the track. Wrong on both counts.
