Re: pinging surprise

I don't use a timing light until I think it's right usually. I use a vacuum gauge and a tach and listen to the engine as I minutely adjust the dist. after getting the carb idle set right.. When I get the highest idle and most vacuum I reset the idle and check the timing  to see where it wound up. The specs are for pure stock low mile engines so they don't often work well for us. My car runs about 16deg advance now and loves it. Starts good and no ping. I bet your timing is more of an issue for you than fuel octane. Unless you use the 86/87 stuff. I'd shoot for the 91/93. If your car pings on acceleration after you have it "timed" then turn it back just a bit at a time till the issue is cured.

I tried to time it before, but my lack of exp with that hinders me than helps lol. At first I was adj it with advance still on it, then I had to do it over with it off. My timing tab is confusing too. It's very small and hard to see, the numbers I remember on it was just 0 and 10 I believe..

Perhaps you should check the timing too. You may be able to retard it a tad and lose the ping. I have heard there can be issues with the octane booster getting over concentrated by not mixing well. I have used it but I don't seem to really need it.

I filled up the other day with just the "plus" fuel not the premium thinking, hell its almost 50 years old, with all the wear im sure its not gonna matter. Well i was wrong. It seemed like i could barely touch accelerator without it pinging and if i gave it a lot it was ridiculous. So, on the way home i filled up half a tank of premium. I went to Oriellys and bought a bottle of some "hyper lube" octane booster, supposed to boost it by 7 points. I added that and bounced the car to get it to mix. I took it for a drive and there was absolutely no ping. I was surprised. I have never checked the compression on my 383 but im guessing it still must hold close to original specs if the manual says to use 103 gas, which im guessing was premium in 64, I almost have this tank empty, and i plan on filling up with premium and then adding another bottle. Wont be 103 but close enough....

When i changed them i had some champion plugs in it, but i could tell it didnt idle well and run good, now it seems fine but im unsure if those are "hot" plugs.
