I've been "self-learning" for decades. I can't calculate how much that has co$t me in parts and labor. :)  LOL  

With feedback, the fuel injection has to be "smarter" than a carb over a variety of operational conditions. 
Better to think of the $2k as "how much per month" cost. Less than $100/month over a couple years for 
throttle-responsive driving.
