I say go for it.  To rebuild the tranny is gonna cost probably $800.  Plus you get a 383 and tons of parts for your Newport.  Just be sure to give him a low ball offer, say $800.  He just might take it.  Did that with my 65 Polara.  Buddy wanted $1250 for it.  I got it for $750, first offer.  Then a year and a half later I picked up a 4 dr parts car for $120 with a pretty much perfect front clip.  My point is JUST GRAB THAT CAR ALREADY.  You won't regret it.
