Dear Gregory:

January brings decidedly poor driving conditions for some, so this month we're pleased to present you with an extraordinary gallery of photos of cars seen on the streets of sunny Havana, Cuba, as well as one visitor's account of his recent experiences on the island.

In addition, if you're considering a purchase in 2012, don't miss our discussion of a developing trend in the collector car market.

Ask Hagerty Concierge
QUESTION:
The power steering pump is leaking in my 1966 El Camino. Can I put a stop-leak fluid in it?

ANSWER:
According to my 1966 Motor's manual, your truck has the Saginaw Rotary Valve power steering system, which is an internal power steering system (meaning the power component is inside the steering gear, not an external cylinder and ram). You can use power steering stop-leak products in this car, and it may help somewhat for a while, but you may find that the power steering needs an overhaul after all these years. Seals often dry up and leak from age and deterioration.

Restoration Tip of the Month
Be Diligent
Once you've decided to purchase and restore a classic vehicle, take the time to find a SOLID-bodied example because the metal work (fabrication, metal replacement and paint) will be the single-most expensive part of your project. Be diligent in your search. A pre-purchase inspection by an independent party can help you ensure you make a smart buy. A rusty hulk is a cheap way in to the collector car hobby, but it's the fastest route to an abandoned project. Happy motoring!
