That is an excellent article you wrote. A real boon to the tapered axle crowd. I wish I could print it up to stash in my files but alas still have the computer/printer not talking to each other fiasco.

)  It's pretty easy to do and will save you $$$ if you ever have to
replace a drum. There is no good reason to swap out a tapered axle
unit for a street car. They are just as strong as the later 8.75
units. Now, if you're going racing and will be messing with the
gearing on a regular basis, yes the later model axles are easier to
pull but other than that they offer little advantage. Read the
article, it will help you make the decision to keep it or swap it
out.
