Set the your engine to top dead center. The rotor will be pointing at number one. Then plug the wires not the cap following your firing order.

Just to confuse things further- Number 1 cap
terninal can be any place you want it. With #1 piston at TDC on the
compression stroke You can put the dist in with the rotor pointed at any
terminal-- that would be fireing #1 sparkplug. . Be sure you know the
direction of rotor rotation before running the rest of your
wires!..............MO

Another thing to consider.Is it a Chrysler or Prestolite
dist? No.1 is different in the Prestolite.Odds are it's a Chrysler unit.
