Steering box leak

The power steering box on my Dakota blew the bottom seal just above where the pitman arm mounts.  The seal was readily available at NAPA.  I first tried to just pick the old seal out (successfully) and then slip the new seal down into place (unsuccessfully).  It would almost fit in there but not quite.  I decided I would need to disassemble the box so I wasn't working around the shaft and it really wasn't that big a deal to do; nothing went flying.  However, for some reason I absolutely could not get the new seal to fully seat where it goes and I finally ruined it trying to finagle and force it into place.  As the Dakota is my non-duty-related daily driver I finally just went back in and bought a reman to get going, so I still don't know what I was doing wrong.  I put the old box back together to get my core charge back, just without a seal.
