I don't remember fan clutches coming into use until some years later.  Had an email recently from Nick (furyus63) here on the BB about the topic of fans and cooling.  He talked about one of his engines from an a/c car having the 7 blade fan w/ a 3 core radiator.  But I'll bet it used the spacer and not a fan clutch, he didn't elaborate on that part.
