Re: Cam questions - Vote now

Hi
I just put an gear venders over drive in my max-wedge. I think that is the only way to get any kind of fuel economy out of our old big blocks.

As far as choosing a cam based on mpg results, the only thing to look at is the overlap. Nothing else matters. If you have to much overlap go to a smaller duration.  Use a 110 centerline as you only have 320 inches. Most cams are on 110 already. I use Bullet cams out of La. They may also go by Ultradyne.  If you pull the heads and use a 30 degree seat that is a huge help with a low lift cam. The best way to increase mpg is to slow the engine down. 276 gears or an overdrive trans. Od trans is a bit of work to fit but you get good results.  Mpg like anything else is thye right combination. Cam convertor gear and carb jetting. Most carbs are way fat to start off and need to be leaned out. Just my opioin.

I have a cam in my car that is a step or two above stock I would have to ask guru gary P. to know he sent it to me. But I would not go any smaller than this cam!!! This thing is a stump puller but shuts down at 4000.   Headers would probably help that issue as I have manifolds.  I have a 4 speed and 323 gears with 15” tires. And I got as hi as 18 mpg on the way to the mopar nationals 17 on the way back and 15 playing around home. I wish I had a hotter cam but without headers I see no point.  On the up side I just came into a project ’65 fury 2.  That had the poly im currently running in my valiant.  I have several poly motors laying about so I think im going to build a Rich K. typ of poly engine for this car.  Ie. Big cam, headers, racing converter and big gears for rapid launches.  2- 4bbl carbs. All that sorta thing. I have pedals I could make the car a 4 speed too.   O the decisions ….

Rich,

The stock Hyd. Poly Cam is 240/.405” (180/184@.050”) 110LC and the
HP Poly Cam is                    256/.440” (206@.050”) 110LC

The “stock” HYD. Poly cam will purr.
The 256 HYD Cam will have a very slight uneven idle.

Let me know what your polling results are.
