BB fuel pump pushrod

Hello all,
I'll admit I'm feeling like kind of a knucklehead that it took me almost 7 years of my 383 being difficult to start, lean-surging, and leaving me stalled out for hours before I realized it was a worn fuel pump push rod that was causing all my problems! The factory spec on these is 3.242" and mine had worn down to 2.943" (about 5/16" worn away), which pretty much eliminated most, if not all the fuel pump's lever travel. My '65 Monaco had about 130K miles on it when I replaced the stock cam with a mild street cam in 2005 (don't remember the profile, but it is nearly identical to what would have come stock in a 383 for a '69 Road Runner... Crane made it). The car ran great for the rest of the summer! The next summer the above mentioned problems started.

I figure there was already some wear on the rod when I did the cam swap and it had mated very well with the stock cam. The newly introduced wear pattern of the new cam killed it... and quickly. The cam side was dished in like a bad lifter. The new rule that I will live by, from now on, is to always replace the fuel pump push rod with a new piece when installing a new cam! Hopefully this will help someone else having similar problems or help to prevent them altogether!

The good news is that my ENTIRE fuel system is sparkling clean or new at this point and I have several extra fuel pumps on the shelf for future use.

Glad to be back on the road and reliable again!
