Not only that but it's a scratchNot a grenade! It scratched the inside timing cover no bearings were destroyed as a friend of mine had happen cheap cat brand roller rockers fulcrum bearings disintegrated and fed the bits to a new engine! It was ugly!!!! But a new set of bearings and a thorough cleaning never even pulled the engine back in business well he did throw those cheap a$$ cat rockers down the barrel of his cannon and fire!!! We'll it was not very satisfying considering the damage donePoint is scratch, not chunks chunks break stuff this does not sound as severe as one might thinkAhhh nothing like trashing a motor to make you stay up late wondering wtf happened?Jason
Sent from my iPadNeal, If I understand correctly--you have been driving this engine for a while? You had no concerns until you saw the rubbing on the timeing cover? You do not want to tear it down or rebuild at this time? This engine MAY not be damaged all that much. Does the engine have allowable oil pressure? If yes the main. rod,and cam bearings are probably OK.. Does it make any internal knocking sounds? The bearings and piston pin are most likely OK,. Is there pecking sounds comeing from the top side of engine? Probably hydraulic lifters that leak down when the engine is not started for a while. Pecking stops after a few minutes of run time. Pecking all the time?- lifters are worn. If symptoms here are not a problem, I would not tear it down. Drive it till a problem does arrize and sleep well at night! " If it ain't broke, don't fix it" LOL. Just my opinion..........................MO--

I might pull the pan ( major pain with headers, and maybe not even possible without raising engine) and trade out an oil pump/clean out pan, but whats the point really??, There is no undoing what damage has been done and I am in no financial position to rebuild a motor. Please tell me if I am not seeing clearly as I know I am quite upset ever since discovering this, this morning

pull the pan ,oil pan gaskets are cheap,no sense ruining a engine over a minor job,,i recently dropped an allen wrench down my 340 engine with the intake off and heard it fall all the way to the pan or at least the windage tray..i thought about saying the heck with it and not worry about it ..after 3 minutes of thinking about how foolish that sounded I went ahead and pulled the pan got my allen wrench back and no more grey hairs from it..slept good that night..don't tell anyone as that is supposed to be my secret that I wasn't gonna let out

Sent from my iPhone--Neal please take the pan off it is a pain but easier than a rebuild. that stuff will go through the pump and like sand paper wear it out and the bearings. If your chevy guy cant put on a tc who knows what else is wrong you may catch with the pan off. If you do pull it off a oil pump is cheap you might just replace it , cheap insurance. Not to mention contaminated oil on the cylinder will ruin them and the rings, goodbye seal, hello smoker.

Subject: some people -- update to rubbing fuel pump eccentric
--So I need a new key and a new timing set. Yes I know there is the scary issue of where did the metal go to?? Well I guess I will just hope it's in the bottom of the pan and will stay there as I am in no position to do a rebuild. It had good oil pressure when I last had it on the road. How somebody could not notice a key and a slot is beyond me.OK, thought u guys might find this interesting. I posted yesterday about the curious shallow circle scratched on inside of my 360 timing case. I immediately knew it had something to do with fuel pump eccentric. But it was too late. I was tired This morning i figured it out. In short, whoever put the motor together was an idiot. You could stand over motor and look down and see that the forward edge of eccentric was not parallel to front of block, but slightly askew. That gave just enough extra reach for it to reach forward and hit inside of case.I couldn't figure it out until I took off the eccentric to find they had not seated the slot in the eccentric down over key in cam!!. They just bolted it down any old place.!! They tightened that bolt down so tight it distorted the little cup-like washer the bolt goes through. just smooshed it down. And in tightening it like this they smooshed out the key too. When i went to remove cam gear it wouldn't come. I tried harder with a bar, and the cam gear just snapped This is when i realized the key was smashed out and preventing the gear from sliding off cam . So I took a punch and hammer and attempted to re-shape the key, which worked, the broken hub then came off.
PS The timing gear was set up correctly, but if I hadn't checked I would never have known about thisNeal Zimmerman, Eugene Oregon
