Thanks for the reply Steve. In that "next best ground" situation,
whichever cable was providing that ground would weld its' inner
cable to the metal sheath. This would have happened when I started the car that next morning and since the park cable still works any of the remaining three could be the culprit. If the buttons don't work with the shift cable disconnected the culprit is found and a new shift cable is needed. At any rate, I'll need to be sure of proper ground path from the battery to the engine. Maybe a starter bolt would be better, since the best starter current is the shortest that can be arranged, with clean terminal connections..
