Re: Steering Gear Box Prices

Seems to me that the real question here is "what is the desired result here?"  If it's to just stop the leak and keep the original steering feel, effort, and precision (or lack thereof), then just replacing the seal is certainly the cheapest and may well be satisfying.  I would rather do it myself than trust the generic auto parts store "rebuilds" - even with the lifetime guarantee.  Don says " with the engine out, access isn't much of a problem. "  but imagine the engine back in and THEN replacing that lifetime guaranteed rebuilt unit!

I love the Ehrenberg article, even though it comes mighty close to being a commercial for FFI!  That's what ya do if much improved steering performance is desired and I don't know of anyone who does their boxes like FFI.  The major difficulty I see with that approach is finding a front-end shop that will do the job that way or having the equipment and experience to do it yourself or with friends.  Maybe a real heart-to heart talk with a front end tech (and maybe some personal "lubrication", either monetary or chemical) could get it done that way!

I bought one from Steer & Gear and it was a big improvement over the stock box.

Subject: Steering Gear Box Prices

My power steering box is leaking on my '65 Satellite. AutoZone wants $105, Steer and Gear wants $300. That's quite a spread. Even given the "you get what you pay for" and the quality warnings about sloppy rebuilds in general, it's still real temping to buy the AutoZone unit.

Anybody ever get one from either source?
