Don, that's been my preference since I cheaped out on three starters for my '72 Vega.  Lifetime warranty to the rescue, my foot!!

Changing out those starters convinced me to buy a NEW one and the rest of the 140,000 miles I put on the little Kammback were

trouble free!   But then I I overheated it ONCE!!  and that was the end of that episode of my automotive adventures.

I wonder if Steer & Gear's rebuild is as thorough as Ehrenberg's folks.  It would be interesting to discuss his article with S & G.

My plan is to fix it myself or buy the Steer and Gear unit. I'll be in Carlisle next weekend so if I don't have an answer by then, I'll be face to face with them.

My power steering box is leaking on my '65 Satellite. AutoZone wants $105, Steer and Gear wants $300. That's quite a spread. Even given the "you get what you pay for" and the quality warnings about sloppy rebuilds in general, it's still real temping to buy the AutoZone unit.
 
Anybody ever get one from either source?
