I also installed a drain plug but won't pull the pan unless it becomes a problem. Still to messy!
Bill, you do not HAVE to drop the pan, but in my experience the shop manual procedure described by others can be awfully frustrating. Maybe some folks get it right with just a few tries, but next time I need to tinker with those cables I'm dropping the pan. True, it's a bit of a pain. But seeing what you are doing makes the actual task a lot easier. Most likely a Chrysler shop person back in the day could do it the shop manual way in their sleep after doing it a few times. But for those of us doing it for the first time, or again after some years, dropping the pan lessens the frustration. My pans all have drain plugs for JUST that reason!--
