Thank you all for you continued responses to my query. I’m drinking it in and am pondering the new aspects presented by everyone’s thoughts. I appreciate it very much. No final decision on my direction yet, I’m slow to move at this time. I have the original engine, original tranny and the original rear laying here, that will go with the car when I sell it, or when the kids do after my demise. But really, I figure it's my car, enjoy it now. What happens to the next owner is his problem. With the newer rear housing, you can swap in anything as far as gears, sure grip, bearings, brake parts ect. So much easier, and if you can find a 66 b body rear housing, it's actually a bit narrower than what you have now. As far as an easy swap for the next owner, you are looking at unbolting the shackles, eight bolts at the spring mounts, and unhooking the brake line, emergency brake, and the 4 bolts at the u-joint. not a big deal. In my opinion, the next owner should be happy that you made the switch to the newer rear housing. Unless you are going concours, no judge would ever know you had a few year newer housing under the car. As far as a fun rear diff ratio. I found the 3.55 that was in my Superbird was the best all around ratio. That said, I have run many 3.23 rears with good results, just because you don't run crazy RPM at highway speeds. Your car.... do what you want and have fun !!! On Wed, Dec 13, 2017 at 12:56 AM, Bill Young <byoung16@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I thank everyone for your replies to my query. I have heard of “Green” bearings, I’ll google them to see info and where I can get them. However, one of my goals is to make it an easy swap for a new owner to revert to the factory rear end if they desire. So, getting a spare set of axles seems like the easiest for swapping third members between my stock and the sure grip. I just want to have some fun with the car that I’m not having now. I am familiar with driving a car with 4.11 rear gears and I miss that standing start thrill. However, I’m looking for something a little more modest in the thrill department. Something like 3.70 or 3.91. Also, I like the idea of changing the complete rear end drum to drum, but it doesn’t work with my plan for easy retro-fit for a new owner or even myself if I choose to go back.
