Yes 742 and 489 are popular options (the last 3 numbers in the casting stamping). There's an historical reference to consider: the racers like the Ramchargers back in 1964 used the 741. It's was not just in small CI or A-body cars. Sounds like you have a flange axle rear end already installed, if I read your email correctly. Correct? One option, then, is run what you have and see how it goes. You can change it later if need be. You'll need to decide the gear ratio and whether you want SureGrip when you do the swap.
