I understand the rationale when a builder says that nothing but the combo valley pan/shim gasket is needed. That’s the way Ma Mopar did it. That was on brand new engines though, presumably everything lining up right and nice and flat. That being granted, I use the five piece set (valley pan combo with added thin gaskets on both surfaces at the manifold/head junction). I rub a very thin sheen of silicon gasket maker on all surfaces. Repeat, very thin sheen, not a bead. Haven’t had a problem with this. Of course this doesn’t apply to max wedge setups.
