I just painted the engine compartment of my 64 Belvedere.  Actually under direction of a painter I did the prep and he did the actual spraying.  He had me clean the seams, use a rust converter then apply the seam sealer.  Then after the seam sealer was applied he painted the engine compartment.  My application sound different than yours however here is the product he had me purchase and apply.https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Heavy-Drip-Chek-Sealer/?N=5002385+8709313+8710891+8711413+3293194150&rt=rud.

I considered using black plastic roofing cement, which comes in 10oz tubes and applies easily with a normal caulking gun.  Better choices???
