One thing that no one else mentioned here is that the rear of the crankshaft on the pre-62 A and B engines comes out about 3/4" longer than '62-up A and B V8's. This means that if the engine has a '62-up crankshaft,you have to use a '62-up tranny. Note that a '62-up crank could go in the '58-61 B engine OR vice versa! You could put the '58's crank into a later 383 block and use the original A-413 transmission,or use a '62-64 B-pattern 727 with a later crank engine which could still be shifted by the original '58 pushbutton assembly.
