I'm in the same boat. I decided to stay with a six for the same reason. I hate to admit this, but it would have been easier for me to have purchased a universal Chevy small block cross member and tossed in a Chevy 283/327/350 with a Saginaw three speed/overdrive (of which I have several for my '59 Impala) than try to convert my '59 Suburban to a 318. Modifying the driveshaft, transmission mount and the shifter levels for a GM engine/tranny would be relatively easy for such a swap. Then again, have everything for the 318 swap except the V-8 bellhousing. But hacking off those six cylinder "ears", welding in the V-8 pieces, finding the V-8 bellhousing, changing the rear end ratio or finding a Mopar overdrive (GOOD LUCK!) to use with my current 3.73 gears convinced me to keep a six for now. But then there's the 440 Super Commando/ wide ratio A-833 four speed/ Dana 3:54 Power-Lok combo sitting in the shed waiting for installation in the '59 someday......
