yes, 57 was the first year for the torsion-aire suspension. My thrashed 57 firesweep still has it's original bars, and they work rather well. I plan on replacing them since they might have weakened from the sheer fact that 40 year old suspension parts make me leary. If I were you, and your stuff is stock...I would replace it. It isn;t too too expensive...I think Kanter has a replacement kit. hope this helps. Jon
