George That piece of metal also could be a piece of a bearing,piston ring etc... However your problem with getting the pan out does not have to be that hard. I understand you removed the exhaust Y pipe which is great. Now, did you remove the nuts that secure the engine mounts? If not do so now. Since your vibration dampner has been removed for access to the timing gears, you might want to take a nice, strong piece of wood(Block) and put it atop of the contact cup of a floor jack. Position the floor jack under the bellhousing of the transmission and jack up the engine trans assy. slowly!!! Make sure your distributor cap is off because it may contact the firewall when you lift. Now you should hacve enough space to remove the oil pan completely.
