The Canadian polys (and also the US polys/hemis) used steel shim head gaskets. These gaskets needed a good clean , flat (and non-scored) set of surfaces to work and also needed the gaskets sprayed with gasket cement before installation. If you have the above done, and you make sure the bolt holes for the headbolts are chased clean andd the headbolts clean and oiled when you torque, there should be no blown or leaking gasket issues. Same goes for the steel-shim intake to head gaskets.
