Do you have those spring bands on the drums? This was put on the drums to reduce/damp out the groan from the drum when hot from stopping. The shoes at this point are inteactively going back and forth through a stiction state, and the drum then becomes the "speaker". I agree with Kelly that the metallic or semi-metallic linings are more prone to this due to the higher temperatures that metallic linings generate. One thing to try is to put SMALL amounts of anti-seize compound on the contact points where the shoes rest on the backing plates to see if this helps. If you are missing the springs on the drums, then you somehow need to acquire some. Possibly you can use very high rate units from a hardware store as a substitute.
