Rodger....The biggest difference between 1956 and 1957 DeSoto intakes (all, 2bbl, 4bbl and dual 4bbl) is in the water outlet configuration. For 1957 the bypass hose fitting was taken off the thermostat housing and became a screwed-in fitting below a more conventional thermostat housing on the manifold, and to do this the casting changed in that area. Secondarily, the generator bosses on the 1956 (by the front driver's intake runner) were relocated , and the rear one was dropped. A boss/bracket appeared on the timing case cover and a bracket for the front generator mount was introduced, to move the generator forward some. The timing cover also got an integrated water inlet pipe, rather than the old bolt-on (or oil cooler) version. All these changes were made to accomodate A/C installation and the *new* transmission oil cooler in the radiator. As a final change, there are vertical bosses cast into one end of the 1635779-(1 or 2) head castings for A/C compressor bracket mounting, that the 1956 heads did NOT have (except some Adventurer engines, which were not drilled). These are also NOT drilled on 1957s unless A/C was used, and the holes have to be sealed as two go into the water jacket!
