Both the Poly and Early Hemi V-8s have rather unique exhaust notes which ranges from a whisper quiet when stock to ominous when larger pipes and less restrictive mufflers are used. The exhaust sounds are actually part of an engine's signature. You could always tell a B/RB, A. LA or Hemi going down the street by listening to the exhaust. A small block Chevrolet has that "Chevy sound" which would take away from the car's "ambience." Only the most radical engines with wide open exhaust sound similar, that V-8 roar. Some of the neighborhood kids have put open or at least less restrictive exhaust systems under their small FWD machines. They sound like lawnmowers or angry hornets to me. While a Chevy V-8 will get your De Soto down the street just fine, your car will sound like a late model Suburban or Camaro. Some car people won't be able to put their finger on it, but they'll know something isn't as it originally was. Something to think about. It's been over fifteen years, but I regret repainting the dash in my '59 Plymouth a two tone blue instead of the stock two tone grey (gray?) and changing the entire interior over to blue. Think about how your De Soto will "feel" with a Chevy 383 stroker after taking a ride in a Hemi Forward Looker.
