While Hollander Interchanges are not perfect (no cross-reference is), they have been a great help to me. I reference the correspondence below regarding axles and pinion diameters. Such things can be found in the Hollander Interchange, and are useful to try an narrow down which groups of cars contained certain parts. I can recommend them (I own a Classic Version).
