The easiest way to tell which transmission you have is to look at the push buttons for the shift control. A Powerflight will have only 4 buttons--R, N, D, and L. A Torqueflight will have 5 buttons--R, N, D, 2, and 1. Your car should have the Torqueflight as I think it was standard on the '59 DeSoto Fireflight. Most of the "pushbutton control" transmissions will interchange, but the crankshaft flange changed sometime in the early '60s.
