For those interested in checking it out, the special effects in the original episodes of "Babylon 5" were done on a Commodore Amiga hooked to a "video toaster". The Amiga ran as it operatiing system an early Unix/Linux-type knockoff done by Commodore. This was about 20 years ago! These biggest part of CGI these days is NOT the hardware, but the graphics artists doing the work. These guys are a combination of artist/CAD operator/SW engineer, as they have to take the original models and then animates AND do the light shading. However, even with what you pay them, its cheaper than the actual car chase/crashes these days. This way, the Director can basically animate the storyboard to get the fell, and then do the different angles and "cuts" to get his final product without ever leaving the studio. The actors can be inserted again by CGI over the background of the vehicles and environment.
