Her journey continues here, at Ultra One Corporation. Here, Miss Belvedere will be dipped in the worlds BEST rust remover product, Safest Rust Remover. Why was Safest Rust Remover chosen for the job? There is no other product in the world that can remove rust delicately, without destroying any of the fragile parts such as seals, gaskets, and original paint and decals. The goal is to restore Miss Belvedere to the most orignal state possible and no other product can achieve this

Miss Belvie is a mystery to me. Is it possible that she isn't as bad as she looks? If all the crud were removed from the surfaces, what WOULD she look like? Those staligmites-stalactites? hanging down from the undersides- could they be lime deposits from the water? Look at what the front bumper looked like from just wiping off one spot. But the rear springs rusted till they broke. OK then how come the body didn't have gaping holes in it? Why weren't the floors completly gone? Why didn't the gas tank straps let loose? The sheet metal is a lot thinner. Maybe spring steel can't stand up to water when there is constant weight bearing down on them? Then why didn't the torsion bars also break?
If this miricle company does succseed in cleaning her up, are we going to believe it's the same car????Conspiracy theory # 101 ! ..............................MO

...Indeed....this is just wrong...!
Has anybody seen the Tulsa DVD footage (from Fearless leader Dave and Juley)?
When they lift the trunklid, the frame of the trunklid is completely disintegrating; with large sections not only rusty....but gone completely.
You want a shiny 57 Plymouth go buy a restored one, and leave the Tulsa Plymouth ALONE. It's the only one.

Steve, my thoughts RE: the rear leaf spring breakage- with the water level in the vault continually rising and falling, there were times that there was probably a considerable added weight on the suspension due to any water left in the 'protective bag' and the car body. Over time, from all this loading and unloading on the springs, metal fatigue set in. These leaf springs were not the most durable to start with- I've gotten many cars in the yard that were parked due to broken main leaves. ---John

John,
90% or better of the forwardlook cars that I drag in here that have set in any type of dampness longer than 5 years all have broken and crumbling springs.. Somewhere around here I have pieces of one that rusted completly thru.. It must have been something in the composite of the steel in this era? I have drug in 1940's-mid 50's mopars that sat right along side the Fl's but for decades longer and their springs were fine.

Clean the Interior, Do you mean Polish the Seat Springs, As that is about all that will be Left..

As for the Engine , Maybe if they Fill the Engine with ULTRA and the Drain it after a couple days, That Baby may Fire Straight Up. No need for a Rebuild..

Someone had posted, somewhere, that the reason that the leaf springs broke-away was DUE to their being composed
of high-carbon-content spring-steel, which actually reacts (rusts) badly to prolonged oxidation.

Ms. Belvie's leaf springs are not the first examples which have been found to have rusted/broken -away.

And, just like the "Bonnie & Clyde Death Car", or the 1907 Thomas Flyer "Around the World Race" winning car, etcetcetc....
a non-restored artifact is INFINITELY more interesting and informative, than some-old re-creation of a car.

Something left to the imagination (like old-school strippers, or ANY state lottery--lololol) is BETTER, than the reality of the situation
[look at all those UN-happy lottery winners, out there; poor babies!]....

You want to see what Ms. Belvie looks like, under her patina? Go to any wrecking yard, and look-around you.

neil, i have a funny little story to tell you, and it's TRUE!!

my grandma's first cousin got a divorce back in the 30's. i don't know why she got it, but she got it and the three kids. she also happened to be a schoolteacher, which must have run in the family at that time.

anyway, she moved herself and her children from rural mississippi to tulsa. however, she had a really bad experience....... clyde barrow STOLE HER CAR!!

well, being an educated woman and a single mother of three, she decided not to just sit back and take this. she wrote a letter to pretty boy floyd, who had many family members living in the area of sallisaw, oklahoma. she described her unfortunate circumstances to him, and asked him if he could please help GET HER CAR BACK.

.....and he DID.....

i'm not aware of it having any bullet holes or any other lurid, interesting details, but i always thought that it was pretty cool that she actually got her car back and got to use it. her name? sally. her surname? hidden to protect the innocent. however, both my grandma and my cousin (her daughter) confirmed the truth of this story to me. i always thought it was pretty cool how an outlaw would prevail upon another to give an ordinary person a break.

maybe miss belvedere will get a good break, too!

A coincidental part of our Tulsa trip, The J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum in Claremore. The cut out of Bonnie Parker is leaning on her Colt .45; left behind when they bugged out of a hotel on short notice. Pretty Boy Floyd at right; one of the shotguns near him was tossed out of his gang's car during a police chase. - Rob

A positive prognosis

KELLY KERR / Tulsa World
Robert Carney (left) and Dwight Foster look inside the 1957 Belvedere that was unearthed from the Tulsa County Courthouse lawn this summer. Carney is a member of the Maryland family that won the car and Foster is a New Jersey businessman whose company will try to preserve the car.

By RANDY KREHBIEL World Staff Writer
11/2/2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Complete coverage of Tulsa’s famous buried car, including a story archive, slide shows and videos.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unearthed car's owners have plans to preserve it

Dwight Foster isn't ****eyed but he is an optimist.

Looking over the crusty remains of the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere lifted in June from a 50-year-old time capsule, the New Jersey industrialist said, "It's actually not as bad as I thought it might be."

That came as a surprise to many of those familiar with the Belvedere. Many and maybe most of its years under ground were also spent under water, and the car was much the worse for it.

But Foster and Robert Carney, a member of the Maryland family officially declared winner of the Belvedere on Thursday, have big plans for the car.

"I want to treat this car like an artifact from the Titanic," Foster said, "clean it up and scrape the barnacles off it, so to speak. I feel like there's a better than 75 percent chance we can get the engine to run."

That doesn't mean Foster and Carney intend to make the car driveable.

"We want to preserve the car, not restore it," Foster said. "We're not going to replace any more pieces than we have to get it 'up on its haunches.' "

By that, Foster said, he means setting on all four tires at an even keel. As is, the Belvedere sags badly in the back because it's rear leaf springs rusted through. Surprisingly, though, its four tires remained inflated on Thursday several months after being aired up for the first time in half a century.

Plans now call for Carney, his aunt Catherine Humbertson Johnson, 93, and mother Levada Humbertson Carney, 88, to return to Tulsa on Nov. 29 for a sort of bon voyage party for the Belvedere.

The car will be trucked to Foster's company, Ultra One Corp., in Hackettstown, N.J., for treatments with a degreaser and an acid-free rust remover made by Ultra One.

Foster knows some people want the car to be left untouched but said that's not practical.

"If nothing is done, it will be dust in two years," he said.

The intention, Carney and Foster said, is to bring the Belvedere back to Tulsa next year for a second unveiling. Enthusiasts will be able to follow the car's progress on Foster's Web site at http://www.missbelvedere.com/

Foster said portions of the car will be revealed on the Web site, but "no one will see the entire car until we bring it back here."

Foster said he is a "car person" who became interested in the Belvedere several years ago. When he saw the condition it was in, he recognized it as a chance to give his company "five minutes of fame."

Robert Carney's aunt, Catherine Johnson, and mother, Levada Carney, were declared rightful claimants to the car on Thursday. The two women are the sisters of Raymond Humbertson, whose entry in a 1957 contest to guess Tulsa's 2007 population came closest to the actual number.

Humbertson died in 1979 and his wife died in 1988. The couple had no children.

Foster and Carney hope to build a customized trailer for transporting the Belvedere to car shows around the U.S. and perhaps overseas. Both said Tulsa would always have first call for it.

"It is Tulsa's car, and it will always be Tulsa's car," Foster said.
............................................................................................................................

So looks like a Re-union may have to be June 2008 , Or is everyone Still set on going to the Car where ever it is in June 2009....

He won't need a special trailer to display it,,,,,, several 5 gallon buckets ought to work just fine!

He should have taken the $300G's (if that rumor was true) he could have retired!
After the dip, he will get $75.00 for scrap and a big bill for clogged drains!

The Codpiece really had no choice, in his statement, to the public; he knew that he was in a hostile environment, and saying
to leave-her-alone was a little bit of "sour grapes", as if he were saying :"If we can't fix-er-up, ain't nobody should do it" , either.

He didn't really make a strong-enough statement that the car should be preserved, as a unique, historical artifact (pretty hard
for any hot-rodder to make THAT statement, though!)

Now wait a minute Neil!  I represent that remark! LOL  As a definate rodder, I don't happen to believe every car should be modified, just every type of car!  LOL  In fact, I believe this car should be preserved as a historical artifact!  The circumstances surrounding this car make it a part of our automobile history.  Now, the owners can do whatever they want with their car, but I personally believe at least some group or museum or whatever should take this car and preserve it (with the memoriabilia that was inside) as it is with the full story of how it came to be.  Now thats cool!

That's the POINT, James!!!!

Since the Codpiece IS incapable of doing anything to the car, he declares that it SHOULD be left intact, as nobody ELSE could
do the job, properly (and the Boydster, therefore, saves-face, on NOT being shown-up, by anyone)---huh????

The funniest thing/comment, regarding the car's future, is the statement that :" ..it will turn to DUST, if nothing else is done to it
to preserve"it .....

For sure Boyd and his band of monkeys would only want to drop a small block chubby in it and bondo the crap out of it. I also love street rods and real rods but nothing boyd wishes he could build is a real rod or even a hot rod. And yes I have built and repaired real rods and customs, as well as muscle cars. This is my outlook on the restoration of Miss Belvedere. She should be placed back where she was originally buried and left be. We all should be proud of the fact that of all the cars that there were already out on the market it was a 1957 Plymouth that was chosen to be that one car to be remembered in her own special never done before way. That's just me though.

You make a good point, but there would have to be a sump pump installed this time :o)

I'm a newbie, an enthuiast of old American cars especially Mopars. I have been watching the unburial of the '57 Plymouth. Too bad water got in. I have seen the up-close photos of the car. Man all of the sheet metal appears to be so badly rusted, that in some areas that are more reddish or brown colored, one can easily poke his/her finger through. In those reddish/brown areas there are even a few holes appearing. Not to mention a crack behind the rear bumper near the tailfin on the right side. There's also a crack in the floorpan near the right side torsion bar. The trim and bumpers are in good shape. Some of the underbody components such as the frame, upper and lower control arms, driveshaft and rear differental may still be ok but it's hard to tell because of all the gunk. Of course all of you know the rear leaf springs are rusted through LOL. It scares me to think what would happen when they try to derust it... :-\

It's probably aired-out, by now (but turning-to-DUST, according to Ultra-F-Up's blog--LOLOLOL).

As long as the car is kept DRY, it ain't gonna deteriorate any further!

LOL well my biggest concern is not that the car would disappear if it was subject to rust removal. There has to be some metal left. They were able to open the hood intact, if it was completely rusted through it would have broken if they tried to open it. My biggest concern is that, they claim they would not restore it but clean it up. I can clearly see the car would look like swiss cheese after it was cleaned up, with the remaining sheet metal being thinner than factory specs because of the pitting. I wouldn't want to see a swiss chesse car shown at Tulsa. Guess they wouldn't have a choice but to restore the car with most of the parts replaced, and it wouldn't exactly be the same thing.

Oh by the way is that smell typical of rust?

No, dave, "seriously", if you read all the threads, you'll see where the car was claimed to be "rusting-away/turning to dust"
if it were not to be 'cleaned/de-rusted/restored' by Ultra-Fraud.

Ultra-Boyd apparently threw some money at the new owners, who saw some easy money/promotional possibilities involving
a cleaned-up hulk, so, here we are awaiting the results of a complete F-ing up of the car; as I've/others have written:
if 'we' wanted to see a nasty car-hulk, we could go visit any big-national (or even local-back-yard).

The reason that the Bonnie & Clyde death car, and the 1907 Thomas Flyer (at museum-diorama, in Reno) Around the World
Race winning car are so interesting, is due to their UNRESTORED/original condition.

Neil, yep I have read lots of the posts here during the past few months as well as keeping up to date on the forum page of missbelvedere.com and I am aware of what the guy at Ultra One said about the car going to dust. Pretty scary and the car definitely got worse since it was unveiled in Tulsa. The missbelvedere.com forum has the latest about the car being placed on a flathead for the trek to New Jersey. You can see the latest pics of the car, it does look worse (they couldn't put it in a trailer!). Check it out. I basically just wondered if there must be at least some sheet metal not yet rusted though because the hood didn't break when they opened it. However the bracing sheet metal beneath the trunk door was so rusted though they fell right off the trunk door when they opened it! Creepy man!

She's definitely starting to flake - and there's now a gaping crack on the back panel above the rear bumper, just this side of the tail light.

That "flaking" off may be the cosmoline that had been applied to the car, coming-off.

Looking at the wiped-off bumper (shiney underneath the coating on it--that wasn't rust) and other places where that brownish-film isn't thick (like, around the tail lights) I'm thinking that the painted sheetmetal might become revealed, after it's Ultra-F'ed-up.

Removing that cruddy patina won't do the car any favors; they'd have to hose-off the interior, too, if they're gonna wash-down the exterior & engine compartment, and undercarriage, so, all those beautiful colors and textures inside and outside it, will be gone and it will look like any other forsaken back yard wonder.

That's when I found that link MoparsRule! put up, watched the clip all the way through, and there it was!

It must have gotten caught in the rain on the ride over and melted. All someone needs to do to obtain the car is scoop up the puddles leading to NJ, dry them out, and fill the urn with the remaining dust.

I have wondered the condition of Belvederes body. I saw 1 picture where there was kinda paint under that mud. But is it badly rusted?
The running gear is might be gone, but I hope the engine will run. I have been wondering these things several months.
Just hoping that everything goes well, and we have something to look when De- Rusting progress is over.

Her Condition
by Jessie Rock on Tue Dec 11, 2007 1:50 pm

Well she is very weathered from her long life in all that water and OK mud but there are high hopes for her. We have at this time only been documenting her current state very carefully. At closer look she seems to have quite a bit of paint on her and her chrome seems to be more intact then originally thought. I will keep you posted and hope to have some photo's up very shortly.

Just in case any of you are looking for the best close up views of the '57 Plymouth, click here. No they are not the most recent views of the car but it has clear up close views including the rusted through spots as well as the crack near the right tailfin. However, if you look on the passenger side lower control arm, you can see a little bit of exposed metal from the car being hoisted out of the crypt. Clearly shows the control arms/front end components are still in excellent shape. Also on the trunk door you can see some of the outer layer chipped off, revealing the sheet metal inside (hard to tell if it is good or bad though), so I also think some of the light brown stuff on the outer panels are just mud. The small holes are mostly on the brown rusted through spots as well as dark brown patches such as the panels behind the rear bumper, behind the rear window, lower panels where they are in the water longer, etc.

Thank you (I think!)

Well, Charlie got memorialized, in a close-up photo!

As far as the CAR is concerned: I see nothing that a little of "ULTRA-F-Up" can't restore, to get that OEM appearance back !!!!

Isn't that the truth, Ultra none is doing a major injustice to Tulsa history and the dorks from maryland are allowing it to be done for a little fame and the all mighty buck of coarse.

It does seem odd that there are no current photos of the car. You'd think that Ultra-Dud would have wanted the publicity rush to start as soon as possible. ---John

Welllll......it's pretty (ugly, actually!) clear that Ultra-F-Up doesn't/wouldn't want to show their "work" in progress, so that the
full dra-ma of their finished-result might be revealed, at a momentous occasion; kinda like the King Kong Show, in Nueva York,
(and we all know how THAT production ended!!)

OR, to quote some "Military Intelligence" , from a recent event : "We had to DESTROY the village (car) in order to SAVE it."

I just have to believe that when they pull it out of the dip tank or however they do it, they will regret they ever got involved. I hear they have some want ads out for a rust-free 57 hardtop body and chassis.

No the car won't be dipped into a large vat but by section according to Ultra One but I am not surprised they posted a wanted ad for a rust free body/chassis! I read somewhere that one could easily poke his/her finger through the body panels on Miss Belvedere. Is that true?

Yes. There were several spots where small holes were evident in the body. There are undoubtedly places where the paint itself is what keeps the holes from appearing larger. ---John

....the bottom line is: whatever results arise from Ultra-None's "work" on the car will not represent the actual car/artifact, that came
OUT of the vault, but, rather what Ultra-None DID, to the remains of the car, that came out of the vault.

Yeah replacing everything means it isn't the same car that was unburied from the vault. Virtually only the trim are in excellent shape. The only reason Miss Belvedere was still presentable was because it was under water which helped keep the shape. I imagine if somehow air got in long before they opened up the vault, the car would have turned to dust, leaving only glass, rubber, thick metal parts, etc.

OK, everyone. Time to review my checklist. This list was created on November 3, 2007 and posted to the listserver and possibly here on the message board. This is my prognosis for Miss B:

1. Car leaves Tulsa with great expectations that it'll be brought back to
its former glory.
2. Few pics on the Ultra-One website of the Process beginning, then nothing.
3. Word comes that the Process is taking a bit longer than expected.
4. Article appears in a 'paper of record' that car far worse than expected
(true or not true--it doesn't matter) and lots more money is needed to bring
the car back
5. Lots of finger-pointing, charges, threats of lawsuits, etc.
6. Ultra-One decides that they want nothing further to do with this. Leaves
car outside where is deteriorates.
7. Car is parted out and pieces are sold on ebay. 'Own a piece of history',
etc.
8. The sorry end to a car that brought so many people together.

Ron

Yeah, I read somewhere that Boyd pronounced the '57 Plymouth "completely unrestorable". The only cars I have seen that looked worse are those in the Northeast junkyards where rust had broken them into half!

However I wanna understand this more clearly, will this car really turn to dust or was it something made up by Ultra One? Just letting ya know that I signed up on the Ultra One forum and told them it's a historically important car and I wouldn't take any chances judging on the shape the car was in. I asked them if there was any way to test if there's any metal left first before any attempts of derusting is peformed.

The car will not ever turn to dust (at least, until the Sun goes supernova, in about 10 billion years).

That said, it definitely COULD get destroyed at/by the hands of Man, in various ways.

As long as the car can be kept from continuing to exist in a warm, moist environment, it should have stopped deteriorating the day that it was taken out of its vault/tomb, on 6/15/07.

Unlike "Christine", it can not restore itself, AND, it is beyond being 'restored' by humans, either, but, it could/can be maintained and preserved in its as-unearthed condition by a conscientious museum-owner.

That link, for whatever reason, isn't working. Here's what I dug up on the same site in a search:

Looking good so far, folks - a pic for a taste. Weathered, but intact in tests of the solution:

I Never noticed that First PIC...

But like you say, It does look Encouraging,, Although they have Only Cleaned the Surface.. Still a Looooong Way to go..!!!!!!!

Interesting to read that their cleaner may Not touch the Red Mud that has hardened like Concrete.. Maybe that is what is holding the Frame together..

Well Bart, I honestly thought that, if the intentions were to preserve rather than restore, that they would be able to do the job with something that's non-abrasive/physical impact. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that her sheetmetal is a d@mn site thinner than what it was as new.

Can't wait to see when they start working on the frame, suspension etc. to see if there's any possible way to salvage what's there to hold her up. Looks like concrete blocks - front as well as rear - are in place at present.....

Glad to see the latest pics, the car is definitely very weathered but the metal is still there in places, just thinner and pitted. More solid than I previously thought. The car can be compared to my old 19th century cans with forged nails inside. The cans are very rusty but I found that metal is still beneath the patina, just thinner than they used to be. As thin as soda cans I would say. But they're still solid and have not gotten any worse since I got them because I kept them dry. Basically they got weathered from their long stay in a mine where the previous owner found.

The cleaned fender doesn't look too bad, but than again take a look at the aluminum headlight bezel... huge chunks missing. For comparison how it was at Tulsa (bottom picture).

If you look at the original pic of the headlight door, all that white blotchy stuff is corroded aluminum. It's the equivalent of rust on steel. It would probably crumble off if given a good washing. Ultra-Hype's process just removed this stuff, leaving only good metal.

That's true. I just kind of hoped that there would have been some solid aluminum under there...

LOL!

IMO, no way in hell they get her running. I've seen engines that have sat as long as 37 years ('51 Studebaker, in my case) turned over an ran again, but that was in dry storage under - as they say - optimal conditions, as in dry conditions. This baby's 5 decades worth of water-logged - the thing is probably fused to one solid hunk of iron inside by now.....

ive got a hot rod mag with a pick of an old hemi engine has a big tree growing through it looks like a big ball of rust but they machined it and rebuilt everything and it went on to be in a drag boat then a street rod . as long as the block is not cracked its possible it could be rebuilt . might have to boil it to get the pistons out but iron has to have air to rust and id say after it was full or water it wouldnt have leaked out very quickly . id bet if you could get it apart it could be rebuilt .

My point exactly, Adam.

The Bevy's been out and exposed 7 months already - try & take it apart and 5'll get you 10 it'll be an exercise in crumble than dis-assembly, treatment or no.....

All things considered, the "end-results" is/are NOT a ringing-endorsement for Ultra-NONE!

Wow, what a surprise! It's just like NEW, now !

Where they've worked on it looks 'better', sure...but what have they done with the rust that's crept UNDERNEATH the paint? Nothing. And that's just the body. I will say, the best thing that can happen for this car now is to try and preserve what's left...but this company's going about it the wrong way I think. They should have dipped the entire, intact car in rust removing solution, for as long as it takes. Too bad it didn't go to somewhere like Rusteco, that company could have done that I'm sure.

Well looks like all they are really going to get done is to clean and polish some of the brite work. Maybe some paint, but very little of that. That was a great pic Lawrence. I guess we will see just how much distruction ultranone can manage to do to Miss B.

That's a great picture! Great results so far, too!

If the rest of the car cleans up as well as that front fender, it will be fantastic.

I'm curious as to how much effort, such as rubbing, polishing, buffing, etcetera it took to get to that point.

How many hours of actual labor, other than the application of the deruster did it take?AndyInOregon

I was told 16 hours and 15 gallons of recirculated product. Not sure about rubbing, etc.

I say make the car more presentable. It looked a lot better than I thought it would, in person. Looks like they could clean it up and make it pretty nice for a Tulsa reunion. Then dip the car in plastic.

Yeah, Larry; but the entire POINT of preserving the car in its as-unearthed condition was to CREATE and maintain interest and wonder, as to what the car's condition might be, or might-become, underneath the crud, corrosion, and the cosmoline, if those things were to be removed.

Now, we may all get to see what-lies-beneath, and therein the charm and the mystery, and the attraction of the car dies...

Magic tricks are no longer any fun, when the stunt is revealed, and strippers (used to, anyway) keep some of their clothing on, for a similar reason (to maintain interest in what is being shown, or revealed).

Aww that's not very fair. This car is HARDLY the bearded lady. I'm not missing the point but the 6" strip of the bumper boyd's monkeys cleaned was a strip tease to me. At the convention center I looked at the headliner and it had a nice round spot where no water/ related contaminates got to and it was saggy but looked really good. I want to see the car cleaned up. I'd travel again to see that car anywhere. It will never loose its allure and I'm darn glad I took the trip and had the experience. Did anyone really expect that car to be perfect after 50 years and 2 floods in Tulsa's history? I like the well optioned cars and Furys as much as anyone but they aren't what that car IS. Miss Belvvy was a rather stripped down 2-dr HT. I like to see those and '57 heaven's car was nice.. but wasn't an accurate depiction of Miss B. I would have liked to have seen some money spent on locating another that was REALLY identical the Miss B. All I ever see is high optioned 2-dr HT's and that is not they way it was for the majority. My .02....

You'd have to get the moving parts freed up first. I expect you'd need to plunge the engine into a bath of Ultra one first before trying to disassemble it.

I'd like to see the car cleaned and preserved. I honestly hope they don't "tour" the country because anything can happen along the distance and that puts this beloved artifact in danger. I'd like to see her to be placed in a museum safe from potential weather and environmental hazards like tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.. As for our friend boyd.. he needs to keep himself and his associates as far away from all the cars he so generously misrepresents. I have absolutely no respect for that man and his crew now what-so-ever. I never thought him talented and now I know he has no taste and class to speak of as well.

I second that notion. If it means a road trip to see her at her new location (57 Heaven?) after her "restoration", I'm down for that. I wouldn't even mind inviting Boyd Codpiece for an old fashioned ass whuppin' for those who want to get their exercise.

Once the car is “done” it will be interesting to see how forthcoming Ultra One is on the amount of parts that have been replaced (or “reinforced”).

Yes, I was there for the Saturday car show. I didn't have a car entered but I admired all of the other great cars. I saw for example the 1957 Dodge that belonged to the same Canadian family since new. I don't remember their name but the current owner/driver posts here on the board often. Another interesting car I remember seeing was the 1957 Plymouth upgraded with a Ch3vy engine. The owner of this car posts here often too. Not to my taste frankly, but I give him his props as the job was well done. There were so many great FL cars that I ran out of film before I ran out of cars to see. I stopped counting after I had reached 30 pictures.

Well after reading the Link, It seems they are considering CHANGING...

The Frame,
The Interior,
They want it to Run and Move, So possibly Engine / Box ???? ( if Original will NOT Rebuild )
They want it to Roll, So posibly have to change all Hubs Etc ( Again if original will NOT Rebuild )

So When they Go on TOUR with her, It may be the Outer Body SHELL Only Held together with Fiberglass ( in the rear Quarters ) that is Left ORIGINAL...

SAD ... Very SAD...

I've been building engines for 40 years now and saved some pretty rough blocks.....but also ran into some that were just beyond saving I would be surprised to see this one rebuilt. I also doubt they will use the valve covers that are rusted thru LOL..

I think the BIG concern should be if they do try to remove the body from the old frame and set it on the new one. I suspect there is a real possibility it could just fold up if it is not done very carefully.

"....It may be the Outer Body SHELL Only Held together with Fiberglass ( in the rear Quarters ) that is Left ORIGINAL... "

As far as the fiberglassing I hope they do some experimenting prior to jumping into that with both feet. The impression I get from the link (and one I had at Tulsa) is that the sheetmetal is pretty thin and swiss cheesed. I’ve done just a bit of fiberglassing and the process generates a fair amount of heat, on very thin metal I would wonder about warpage and what it would do to the paint on the other side of any metal.

As far as him blaming Coddington for not washing the car immediately I’m not sure I buy into that one (don’t get me wrong I’m no fan of Boyd). The car was submerged and partially over and over again in the past 50 years. The “concrete” substance had likely set years before the vault was ever open.

Like many have said on this board, what they are doing is a complete waste of time, and if parts are being replaced, their sole purpose of gaining fame from the derusting is moot, and, therefore, a waste of Ultra dud's money [good]. ---John

Actually, the car WAS washed-down, by Tulsarama-folks, right before it was transported into the Connie Center.

Brian Cooper has a lot of pics of that wash-down, which occurred with the remains of the car cover still still draped over the car.

There was a lot of nastiness lying on top of the cover.

As far as a wash-down of the car, sans-cover, is concerned, the car WAS in a stable condition, as soon as it got dried off.

Rust/corrosion is NOT a living organism, which needs to be 'killed'.

As long as the car was kept in a dry environment, any further degradation of the sheetmetal was NIL.

If anyone needs further proof; check out the condition of the stainless steel/door handles, etcetcetc....

A further washing of the car would have served no preservation-purposes.

I wonder if the owner of Ultra-F-Up ever served in 'Nam : "We had to DESTROY the village (car) in order to 'save' it " !!!!

Could the derusting process cause a greater chance the remaining metal to corrode further because they would be exposed? I understand they would use a clearcoat but still. I agree with many of the details they claimed about the car, like the remaining sheet metal being pretty thin (I have handled rusty metal which have thinned quite a bit), that the frame is pretty bad (it looked very rusty in the pics), and I knew the windshield was somewhat etched from the dirt and water during its 50 year life in the tomb.

Also I wonder if Ultra One's products are really that good?

Maybe we could get a money pool going here--The Question will be: At what point will the nephew who has control over miss belvy say " I wish I would have sold it to 57 Heaven when I had the chance"
That vision of making big bucks by taking her on tour ,in my opinion is eroding away just like Miss Belvy. I wonder who is going to pay the bill for all that has been spent and all that will be spent--and what will there be to show for it?.................................MO

Yes they are, the deruster and degreaser is in my experience the best on the market!
They are all I will use in my shop!

Cool, Ultra One's stuff would be great for some of the rust and corrosion on my antique light fixtures I plan to restore. I just hope the '57 Plymouth won't be screwed up real bad. I don't think it's practical to put this car on world tours in my opinion, she's just too fragile even if Ultra One succeeds in stabilizing it, the sheet metal is just too thin.

Here is the Lastest Update..

HI Guys

If I may elaborate on a few things. I'm doing this for Dwight without, hopefully, ruffling any feathers

I have seen the car several times, as recently as last week. It is what you see. Some items are OK, some are extensively damaged, but with some bits and pieces, this car, very possibly, will run and roll under it's own power and the majority of it's original parts. The car is to go on world tour. It will definitely need rear springs. The frame may or may not be capable of handling the car moving under it's own steam. The transmission will have to have all it's guts replaced, we're pretty sure, but it's not that far yet. There is a plan to get a new front seat frame for moving purposes.

OK One at a time
Cement blocks. Better than having the frame on the floor. The rear springs are gone. A customized lift is being installed to lift the car more securely. It's there, but not installed yet.

Cement. . . I suspect that stuff is mixed with mortor and lime which erroaded from the vault. It feels like that. That stuff is HARD! Dwight has been working ona gentle formula to wash it away. I think he intends to use it like he plans with the Ultra one with a gentle shower. First order of business is to disolve that without damaging anything else, or the paint.

Allot of the "Chrome" is stainless steel. So there would be no damage. The clips which hold it on are probably gone. . . the chrome on the bumpers is still mostly there, but there are areas it is not.

Some of the items like the hood latch and trunk latch have been soaked in U1 already to see what is going to happen. They are now functioning. The door latches are a problem. . . I have come up with a solution when he is ready.

I know you are all excited and want more info. . . I'll ask Dwight if it's OK to say more. But at least you know there is something happening and nothing wrong. This is like pulling the Titantic from the bottom. A Titantic with Tires. Patience my rusty friends

Uh, I'd like to know "WHO" the: "you are" who are "all excited" about what Ultra-F-up is doing to Ms. Belvie.

"World Tour" ; as WHAT???? some sort of info-mercial for Ultra-None?

Or, maybe, as a testiment of what NOT to do to an artifact.

It sure won't be to show the car, as an artifact of 50 years internment, at Tulsa!

I can't really blame Ultra-Dumb for trying to exploit the car, for promotional purposes.

I CAN blame Ultra-Dud, AND the family, for not realizing the actual, and the historical, value of the car.

The car was what it was when it came out of the ground.

What are they going to be doing about the truck lid (remember the inner supprt falling out when it was opened at Tulsa) ?

I don't know, but what I think I'm reading is that is they are going to be replacing parts in order to bring it up to the level of a rusty old junkyard car and I think there are enough of those around already.

To get it running and moving just to get it running and moving really proves nothing but will require a lot of changes from what it was.

You can "restore" anything, a good example is a relative who "restored" his dads truck.....sum total of original parts; frame, front bumper and VIN tag.

Guess it's just part of the sad journey this car has been on since it left the factory.

My opinion --they will do just enough to be able to move it around --maybe some cosmetics - leave the trunklid down- doubt if they will get it running--and then take it on a pay per view show circuit of some kind , trying for the big bucks --turning the virgin into just another old whore.............................MO
